I just got it working, but have absolutely no idea how or why. 
I modified some BIOS settings (related mostly to virtualization, but also a 
couple of security settings) in order to run a virtual machine (completely 
unrelated to the sound issues) and either this or something else that happened 
around the same time seems to have taken care of the problem. 
The only thing I know is that it was not the reboot (since I had already 
rebooted the computer several times after following every step in
