Public bug reported:

the emebedded terminal plugin in gedit worked fine in 11.10 but seems to be 
broken in 12.04...
It does accept input and returns normal output but without showing you what you 
actually typed in! 
This is fine for short commands like 'ls' but you can't really do any serious 
work!
