Thanks for answering. By trying repeatedly (before I received your response) I 
now know to comment out the cd-rom in /etc/apt/sources.list

A workaround to your CD problem.

1) Edit your /etc/apt/sources.list
2) If you have a CD-ROM line in your file, then comment it out.
3) sudo apt-get update
