I'm sorry I put this on Unity, I actually dont really know where else to put it. The real fact is I first encountered this in Gnome Shell on 11.10, and then started to test my way around with all versions since 10.04 LTS (wich worked fine) and also all different available video drivers at the time (this was a few months ago though).
I will try Unity 2D today (it might take up to 2 hours or so before it starts to lag).
