I found this article http://blog.le-vert.net/?p=24 that pretty much describes all my "symptoms" and explains how it's solved. Supposedly it should work with a newer kernel. However, going through the process described there is too much difficult for my skills, so I haven't tried it.
I'm going to update to 12.04 soon (thus having a newer kernel) and see if it's solved with that one.
