Apparently, either using your method (syncing and stopping the drive), or doing what I did (unmounting-remounting-unmounting) causes the drive to be properly sync'd, whereas just unmounting or syncing and unmounting does not.
In any case, there seems to be a bug in the driver where this particular drive is not handled correctly when unmounting. Maybe there are buffers internal to the drive that aren't flushed until the drive is either stopped or re-accessed.
