Public bug reported:

The system tray in the lubuntu lxpanel is corrupted on upgrade from
11.10 to 12.04, massively expanding the size of the tray. It gets
overlayed with images from anything that appears over it - reminiscent
of an issue with older variants of the system tray I have seen on ubuntu
since 10.04 iirc when an applet crashed.
