Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub

I had this Setup:
/dev/hda1    -> Windows XP
/dev/hda2 -> leftover /boot from an old Gentoo
/dev/hda3    -> Swap
/dev/hda4    -> / of a Kubuntu 7.04 (originally 5.10, continually updated)

I needed to reinstall Windows. After that I wanted to reinstall Grub
into the MBR of the disk.

I tried several approaches.
First:
Use the Kubuntu 7.04 server installation disk in "repair system" mode
 -> noticing that the disk is recognized as "/dev/sda" (SCSI???)
 -> reinstalling Grub via the dialog-based installer didn't work
 -> going to a console, running grub manually (root (hd0,3) and setup (hd0))
and rebooting leaves me with a white, blinking cursor and no bootloader

Second:
Use Knoppix
 -> no chance to do anything...

Third:
Use Kubuntu disk again
 -> trying all the tips from here:
         http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=224351&highlight=live+cd+grub
      no success. Same result as above.
 -> doing an "apt reinstall grub" as a last resort and then running grub again
didn't change anything either.

I have no idea what could be the problem. I've done this repeatedly with
no problems when I still had Gentoo installed. I don't really believe
that this should work any differently from there. And in the
ubuntuforums-thread others seem to have used that approach as well.

I'm kind of lost right now. Lost with an unusable system (no Windows-
bootloader, no Linux-bootloader).
