Gerard I'm not surprised the shipped binary drivers didn't work with your card. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia#head-7f830fe17ae6da7c546decbb10c32ff61471258e about which cards are supported by the NVIDIA binary driver shipped by Ubuntu. Assuming you followed the instructions on http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=72490 with regard to DISABLED_MODULES I'd be surprised if the 100.14.09 driver didn't work (however bugs.launchpad.net is the wrong place to report problems arising from using non Ubuntu repository drivers you may get a better/faster response using one of the methods listed on http://www.ubuntu.com/support/communitysupport ). Assuming you can get the 100.14.09 driver going this turns sounds like a similar issue to Bug #112483 .
