Sorry, I didn't write instruction: - put the file into debian/patches/ dir - add line 52_brightness_in_hardware.patch to 'series' file in that dir (not sure if this step is required) - build package as usual
This patch should be applied last, after all ubuntu/debian patches. That's why it fails.
