Could you try to enable "Two-finger scrolling" in
System Setting->Mouse and Touchpad->Touchpad->Two-finger scrolling
to see if double click can work?
Looks single/double click function is nothing to do with low level usb
hid driver.
Also for X freeze, not sure if it is a X bug or hid bug.
