I did more tests and I found that the bug doesn't occur if I set the memory mode in BIOS to:
DDR2-667 instead of -800 It looks like the memory is bad but that's probably not true for the following reasons: -both the memory and the motherboard are spec'ed for DDR2-800 -the same memory has worked at -800 for several years on a different motherboard with no problems -most importantly: memtest doesn't detect any problem with the memory It would be quite weird if the memory was bad, memtest didn't detect it in a full pass (about 10mins) but playing a video hits a problem after a few seconds. I suspect the problem is more complex and it might involve the memory controller or the reserved memory or something else. I'll keep testing when I get a chance. Please let me know if there are tests that can clarify this situation. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/981813 Title: general protection fault: f200 [#1] SMP; EIP is at apic_timer_interrupt+0x21/0x38 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/981813/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
