Since updating the weekend, this issue has started happening on boot as
well. It takes about 3 "REISUB" reboots to actually boot successfully.
It happens after the boot options appear, and before the purple Ubuntu
logo + loading dots appear. I looked at Xorg.0.log but it does not
report any errors.

I have attached /var/log/syslog from this morning. I did notice these
messages followed by a stack trace:

Apr 17 07:56:09 jamesxps kernel: [   44.483246] BUG: soft lockup - CPU#2
stuck for 22s! [plymouthd:276]

It seems to be struggling loading plymouthd. I've done some searching
and it seems fairly inconclusive. The only thing that popped up was
using "nomodeset" as a boot option, but that was from 2010 and seems to
be related to ATI graphics cards, which I don't have.
