Somehow the clientrc contained setting client.draw_pollution=0.
I don't know how that could happen and I cannot imagine how this option
could possibly be useful, but manually editing the file and fixing the
setting to 1 resolved the problem.
BTW, are these options documented somewhere?
E.g., what do draw_focus_unit and draw_coastline do?
