** Description changed:

- I am using a fully updated 12.04.
+ I am using a fully updated 12.04, with unity 5.8.0-0ubuntu2.

When a global menu is active (such as if Tools was clicked on the items
below it are visible), pressing the Alt key occasionally* activates the
HUD below the open menu, and it is not able to be typed in. Despite the
flashing vertical line showing the HUD is ready for text input, typing
does not work and clicking on the HUD to make it active for input makes
the HUD disappear instead of switching to it as expected.

It works as expected with a local menu, such as with LibreOffice's
  default.

The behaviour I expect upon pressing Alt when a global menu is open is
the HUD opening over the top of the menu, or closing the menu.

The expected behaviour when there is a flashing vertical line in a text
input field is that text will be put there. If a field is not active, it
  should not have that marker.

And for the HUD to be switched to when clicked on if it happened to be
  below another item.

  I have provided a screenshot.

*Every other time, an alternate bug occurs.
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/978626 But this bug
occurs often enough to happen within a minute or two of repeating the
opening a global menu and pressing Alt.
