Apologies, I followed the instructions and enabled the oneiric-proposed sources in the ubuntu software centre. Running the update manager, listed updates contain vers 3.0.0-19, not 3.0.0-18.
I tried 3.0.0-19 generic, it works, no evidence of the duplicate bug (955571) -- flickering screen.
