** Description changed: Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-16-generic linux-image-2.6.20-15-generic worked fine with following system: - feisty, xfs root fs (all in one) on (single) SATA disk on an intel ICH5 SATA controller (I965 chipset) + feisty, xfs root fs (all in one) on SATA disk on an intel ICH5 SATA controller (I965 chipset) after upgrading to linux-image-2.6.20-16-generic, the SATA disk is no more under control of ata_piix, which is not loaded anymore, SATA disk becomes /dev/hdc (/dev/hda being the DVD drive) instead of /dev/sda as with 2.6.20-15 - with boot option "irqpoll" I was able to save dmesg and lsmod outputs, without "irqpoll" option, boot fails, even into single user mode. - -------------------------- - klmonz 2007-05-31 - this bug is already described well in debian bug # 419458 [ http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=419458 ] - with 2.6.20-16 the SATA controller is claimed by both piix (IDE driver) and ata_piix (SATA driver) + the SATA disk being under control of piix does not pose a real problem (rumor has it this was intented by kernel devs to resolve a lot of other troubles), + but on some ICH4/ICH5/ICH6/ICH7 controllers IRQ problems rise (see comments below), rendering systems unusable - details how to identify this are given in comment 72 down here (from the - debian bug record) + with kernel boot parameter "irqpoll", some systems seem to work
