Mark - the dmesg from 12.04 has this message:

"netxen_nic 0000:06:00.0: Incompatibility detected between driver and
firmware version on flash. This configuration is not recommended. Please
update the firmware on flash immediately",

while 11.10 has this:

 "netxen_nic 0000:06:00.0: loading firmware from phanfw.bin"

I wonder if getting a flash update from Broadcom would solver this
problem? I have no idea where the install is getting nx3fwct.bin
