After last set of updates today, the problem has gone away. I have restarted several times and unity-greeter does not crash. I did notice however, that the background image of the selected user comes up in unity-greeter if it is a static image. If it is a changing image, you get the default unity-greeter image. Presuming this is by design.
This bug is fixed for me.
