Shame on me... on my machine this issue was in fact an issue of the HDD: some not-readable sectors. Strange, the "long" self-test of SMART did report no errors. Then I ran the WD proprietary HD checker. It also reported "no error". But after the tool ran the issue is gone. Obviously it did silently fix the bad blocks from the spare area. So in the end, also not a SW bug on my side.
