I built the package with the patch you applied and it didn't work. The reason is that the change in configure.ac does not propagate into the configure file (which is generated from configure.ac). For this reason I added dh-autoreconf as Build-Depends and in debian/rules. This can be dropped as soon as the patch is rolled into a new upstream version. I'll make a note of the change in debian/changelog.
