Well, I haven't been able to reproduce the crash at all.  Including
manually killing g-s-d while update-manager was running (although it
just restarted itself, so that wasn't quite what I was going for.)  I
don't know if g-s-d's absence was a cause, at all, or another symptom of
something wrong in the gnome stack, at that time, that could have broken
the two processes.  Or if that's all just a red herring.
