I am curious do you have that DVD drive in a SATA III port? Because I
have had a battle with a very similar issue. Two dvd drives tested and
fail in SATA III ports but in a SATA II port they both function
perfectly.  Had to dig out an old SATA PCI card to get this workaround
to fly.  If that workaround helps you then the bug is not in dvd+rw-
tools its Ubuntu's SATA III support.
