Some recent update fixed the 2D performance. It's still not as good as
under Windows but now it's acceptable.

The 3D problem remains, though...

It might have to do with the following error message I get when starting GL 
apps:
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x4b

Searching for this leads to an X.org bug report:

There it is hinted that this might be a general DRI/Mesa bug since Intel
chips are also affected.

I'm setting this bug to "Confirmed" because several people on that bug
have the same problem.
