I have exactly the same behavior on two AMD64 computers. One has motherboard DFI Lanparty UT nF4 Ultra-D with nvidia 7600GS pci-e videocard, another - ECS GeForce6100SM-M (integrated video). Switching to vt (ctrl-alt-F1..6) changes the stripes but never gets good video. I can still power off with power button - the boot screen comes back and cd gets ejected.
Interesting detail - using Beta 7.04 DVD boots perfectly OK on both machines. I am using alternate install CD for now as a workaround.
