Gareth, this is a different issue. I *think* that users can only shutdown/whatnot their computer if they are part of the 'adm' group - I'm not sure. In any case, it's not a permission error because this was present on a clean edgy installation, with me being the only user on the system. Lukas points to a solution - I'll try it out.
