Your comments about using HDMI default are more to do with pulse for it
to remember default sinks and sources and remembering preferred routing
for applications. i.e. a voip app to always use your usb headset while
rhythmbox to use your output board card which is hooked up to your
speakers etc.

The pulse people are looking at this currently but it has not made it
into ubuntu yet but it is definitely on their radar.

You can try setting your default sink (output) and source (input) with
the commands described here:
