Bruce, That is, indeed, progress.
The good news is that we now know exactly where the problem lies, and what we can do work around it. The less good news is that there is no way to achieve that without patching Ghostscript and the CUPS workflow. I believe (although it's not my area of responsibility) that the Ghostscript changes are pretty straightforward, so should not take long to implement - once done, we'll let Till know what he needs to do in CUPS to make this work.
