For being able to use the URI file:/dev/usb/lp0 you need to run the command
cupsctl FileDevice=yes in a terminal window to activate file:/... URIs. In Precise (12.04 LTS) this should not be needed any more. The USB->Parallel adapater should be recognized as "Unknown printer" by the standard backend and you should be able to set up the printer with system-config-printer, only needing to choose the model manually. ** Changed in: cups (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/608242 Title: Trying to add a printer via USB to parallel fails without a useful error message To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/608242/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
