Last month I have an issue like this, and I resolved that using the
lastest version of Gparted Live CD.

I guess that Gparted in Ubuntu Live CD doesn´t recognize the NTFS
partitions, so try to do this, download from this link (Gparted in
Sourceforge)
"http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=115843&package_id=173828";
(link without the commas) and burn your Gparted Live CD.

Boot from the Gparted Live CD, create the partitions (eg: linux and swap
partitions), apply the changes and reboot.

Now use your Ubuntu Live CD and proceed with the install, and choose
manual for partition, make the changes, format only the Ubuntu
partition.

If this resolve your issue, the Ubuntu team could change the version of
Gparted in Ubuntu Live CD to the latest one.
