Please note that as a work-around I have installed a realtek USB Wifi dongle based on a later Realtek chip.
This works just fine and reports the correct speed. I have had to blacklist the RLT8192 as it hangs my system if it connects to a Wifi Network with no security please advise if you need me to un-blacklist it.
