** Description changed: if i pause the boot, while it's in the bios, before it gets to the linux boot, for about 2 mins, Ubuntu boots fine, and if i reboot at some point that will be fine too. It's only from an absolute cold boot ubuntu will fail to boot. I've tried a Mint liveDVD and that boots fine from a cold boot.
