I've uploaded SRUs of insserv to lucid, maverick, natty, and oneiric. Based on IRC discussions with Steve, I added a postinst to those versions that cleans up the broken shutdown sequence. It's the same snippet that I added to initscripts, but for the SRU case, ensuring correct ordering of the upgrade is too difficult.
