Well, using the option "noacpi acpi=off apm=on" didn't work nor did any
other variation.  I tried Xubuntu with in every variation as well with
no success.  When I reduced the resolution and color to the lower
setting (using F4) it got far enough to show Ubuntu (or Xubuntu when I
tried that) image with the progress bar bouncing left and right.  Of
course it never got past that screen.

Then I finally decided to use another distribution, and that is when I
found Debian.  Debian installed just fine although I could not recognize
my Conextant modem or my Belkin wireless G plus MIMO PCMCIA card.
Apparently you need internet access to install internet access...

Since Debian did get farther than Ubuntu or Xubuntu I probably won't go
back to trying those again.  Although it would be nice to know why
Debian works and those do not, I thought they were based on Debian.
