OK so I've added the ppa and updated (which installed/upgraded about a hundred packages!) and I've had one shell crash (recovered OK) only in the last 45 mins, which is very much more stable than it was. I would go so far as to say it's now usable, but will report back in a day to see if it stays like this. Fingers crossed...
