Simon: Your issue is almost certainly Bug #96240 . You may want to try the workaround listed there.
Felipe: Desktop-effects does not work with the open source nv driver (I would imagine trying to enable it would send your screen white or black). Remember you need to restart X (or better yet reboot) when switching from one to the other. If your 3D is fast and you're using an NVIDIA card then the odds are you are not using the open source nv driver.
