Hi there!

Ubuntu 7.04 (x86_64)
ATI Technologies, Inc. Radeon X850 XT (R480)
fglrx 8.36.5 (XORG 7.2)

Some (i guess..) interesting news....

On my Athlon 64 based PC I had Edgy (6.10 - x86-64 - custom Kernel
2.6.20amd64) installed, and I had the "notorious" problem with
U-SPLASH...all I could obtain was a black and white U-SPLASH.....

After automatic upgrade to Fesity (7.04 - Kernel 2.6.20-15generic) I had
the same problem described here....no U-SPLASH, kernel panic (with
blinking leds on my keyboard).

The "trick" of setting resolution in usplash.conf and add VGA= XXX to
menu.lst worked.....but only when using 2.6.20-15generic kernel !

As I have bug #77734 (Disk Read Errors during boot-time caused by probe
of invalid partitions) on my PC...I always need to use a "costom kernel"
(by patching a kernel source before to install it).

So I downloaded from Ubuntu repository the 2.6.20.3 kernel source,
patched it (msdos.c.tj.7.patch against msdos.c), compiled,
installed....also installed ATI fglrx 8.36.5 (it was really hard to
install...but I could do that...) and all I obtained was:

- my problems with "Buffer I/O error) SOLVED (like when I used custom kernel
2.6.20amd....based on 2.6.20-0);
- U-SPLASH again causing "kernel panic" with leds blinking...

I suddenly applied the "trick" solving U-SPLASH problem on
2.6.20-15generic......BUT NOWAY IT DOESN'T WORK on 2.6.20.3!!!

Whatever I set in "usplash.conf" and "menu.lst" the problem
persists.....when booting 2.6.20.3 it crashes with a kernel panic!

If I put VGA=ask in menu.lst, when I boot it prompts the following:

VIDEO ADAPTER: VESA VGA
MODE COLSxROWS
0 0F00 80 x 25
1 0F01 80 x 50
2 0F02 80 x 43
3 0F03 80 x 28
4 0F05 80 x 30
5 0F06 80 x 34
6 0F07 80 x 60
7 0100 40 x 25

ENTER MODE NUMBER OR 'SCAN': (....if I enter 'scan' the list will
enrich with the following):

8 0123 132 x 25
9 0132 132 x 43
a 0133 132 x 44

Of course NONE of this choice (resolutions) works......it hangs with a
kernel panic.... :(

Coclusions:

1) The trick described here (set usplash.conf and add VGA=XXX in
menu.lst) seems working only on "original" kernels (but I can't
use...because bug #77734 can cause serious damage on the MSDOS partition
co-exsisting on my RAID 0+1 array...FAKE RAID)

2) By the above chart it looks like on booting the system doesn't
recognize a "real" VGA capability (very very low resolutions available),
so of course when trying to display U-SPLASH it fails....

I'm not very expert and I hope I was clear enough.

Any idea? Suggestions?
Thanks to all.
Greetings.
