It doesn't select the already installed package as it's not trivial what do you want to do with it. When a package is not installed, the only option available in the context menu is Mark for installation, so that's what space does, however when you have a package installed, you have three options (reinstall, remove, completely remove) and it's hard to decide what to do with the package.
