I just noticed something (that I should have long ago):

If gnome-shell crashes, I just restart it from a virtual terminal, using:
DISPLAY=:0.0 gnome-shell --replace

If this crashes again, I find the following error message:

Feb 18 18:26:25 godzilla kernel: [ 7721.889237] gnome-shell[5951]:
segfault at 100000007 ip 00007fd9d041c0a8 sp 00007fffd85f88d0 error 4 in
libglib-2.0.so.0.3000.0[7fd9d03bc000+f4000]

Clutter-WARNING **: Unable to compile the GLSL shader: Fragment shader failed
to compile with the following errors:
ERROR: 1:1: error(#105) #version must occur before any other statement in the
program
ERROR: error(#273) 1 compilation errors. No code generated
Segmentation Fault

So this is apparently to do with hardware acceleration. I use fglrx as
the graphics driver.
