A possibly easier workaround (from my duplicate bug #932079): Use pavucontrol for switching between outputs. Oh and @JrZabott: I removed the verification-needed tag, that tag has a very specific meaning for stable release updates, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Tags
