The update procedure worked for me, but here are a couple of notes that may 
help others.
1. After starting the sudo apt-get update process, some things that I typed 
appeared on the screen, others did not. Even if nothing happened appeared when 
I typed, I found that it worked as long as I made no typing errors, the command 
was executed.

2. During the update process, the system seemed to freeze, e.g. it read
11% 1m53sec for a while with no advance. Hitting "enter"  several times
caused it to advance and complete.
