Incidentally, I applied an update to compiz about 24 hours ago (which i
understand has something to do with the 3d look to the desktop),
yesterday (2/8/2012) the problem not only did not happen once all day
(that is: it always prompted me for a password on resume from sleep),
but one or two other times when the UI appeared to 'die' it seemed to
restart on its own quickly without me having to logout or anything.

I don't know which repository i got the compiz fixes from because i followed
the directions to install from here:
http://seethisnowreadthis.com/2011/10/31/how-to-install-ubuntu-11-10-on-the-toshiba-l745d/

(to fix an ATI driver install issue)
which had me do the following for compiz which added a new repository:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:vanvugt/compiz
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I am not ready to cancel/close the bug report yet, but it's possible
this was a compiz issue and not a pm-utils issue. I'm not sure, not
expert enough.
