Public bug reported:

Days ago I attached an external DVI monitor to my MacBookPro 5,1 and
used nvidia-settings with twinview. I opted to make the external
monitor the main monitor. I was pleased it worked quite well -- the
first time I painlessly had external monitor support on this machine
under Ubuntu.

Upon disconnecting the monitor, sessions on just laptop immediately
began to fail. When logging in using Unity the menu bar is shown and
the launcher works. I can launch a terminal just fine. After about
thirty seconds it appears Unity crashes. The menu bar disappears, the
launcher disappears, and the window decorations on the terminal
disappear. The background is shown with just a black rectangle where
the terminal used to be. The terminal doesn't accept keyboard input.
The mouse works, can move around the screen, but cannot do anything
else.

Launching into Unity 2D works fine.

I tried resetting Unity using:

gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz-1
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compizconfig-1
unity --reset

The first two commands completed OK. The unity reset ended with a
segfault.
