I wonder if this is a VirtualBox problem. Creating an Ubuntu VM seems to
have Mouse Integration enabled by default.

Work around:

Selecting the VirtualBox 'Machine' menu on the VM window and clicking on 
'Disable Mouse Integration' makes the cursor visible
inside the Ubuntu VM. Once you have clicked in the VM window to get its 
attention.

This would explain why installing the Guest Additions package fixed the
problem.

It might be a co-ordination problem between Ubuntu and VirtualBox about what 
they are assuming,
or maybe VirtualBox are just assuming that all OS's can support Mouse 
Integration as is.
