Well this isn't a bug with Unity at all; I've experienced similar issues
with GNOME Shell and even on GNOME2. It's a GTK bug instead.

One workaround is to click the dropdown and release the mouse button
VERY quickly. If you don't release it quickly (which happens in most
common cases), GTK thinks you've held the mouse button down and were
selecting an option.
