@Scott, sorry I missed your post in comment #21. Thanks for finding the bad commit.
I don't think it is necessary to run a "fakeroot debian/rules clean" between each build. However, it doesn't hurt to start with a clean tree. I'll build a test kernel with commit e9925217e61dd3594f81b415f2b7e077426f208f reverted for other folks affected by this bug.
