As suggested, I tested with the latest mainstream kernel (3.2.1, linux- image-3.2.1-030201-generic_3.2.1-030201.201201121644_amd64.deb) and the problem still persists, although I had to first kill powerd that grabbed my FTDI device (existing bug, Debian Bug report logs - #586751).
