** Description changed: Possibly specific to macbookpro and/or nvidia video driver: Regardless of the external monitor resolution (at present only 640x480 is possible) whenever a movie player starts (vlc / mplayer / kmplayer / xine tested) the external monitor turns off and then turns back on. This results in a screen blank for the external monitor lasting anywhere between 5 seconds to 30 seconds. This obviously makes using films / animations etc in presentations impossible (if the film is looped then the problem occurs whenever the film loops). I first encountered this under 10.04 but at this point could force the external resolution using the "useedid false" option in xorg.conf When the movie starts the external monitor / projector appears to lose any signal and goes to sleep (just for an instant) then appears to detect the signal again and takes a few seconds to recover. I've tested this on several monitors and projectors all with the same result. It appears to be independent of the type of movie - IIRC I remember a bug in mplayer that can cause similar symptoms for external players (IIRC it tries alternative resolutions for the external monitor under some circumstances) but this problem affects all player for me.
