I've changed my usage of 3ddesktop, and while the symptoms in this report is still a problem for the switcher, it's not important to me any more.
I've bound keys to "3ddesk --goto=N" where N is 1-4 for different workspaces. Since I'm not using the visualization for browsing for a desktop any more, it doesn't matter that the desktop images are blank to begin with.
