Hi Sean, I also still have the problem... Skype from partner, installed everything proposed here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cheese/+bug/880271/comments/6 (both ways).
Offcourse tried starting skype with LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so in front, as well as without...
